BT Cloud Voice cordless DECT phones

Not everyone works at a desk. For staff on a shop floor, in a warehouse, around a surgery or behind a bar, a cordless phone keeps them reachable on your business number.

In short: BT Cloud Voice cordless phones use DECT: a base station on your network talks by radio to cordless handsets, which work as extensions on BT Cloud Voice. They suit shops, warehouses, surgeries, schools and pubs. Coverage depends on the building, so larger sites may need repeaters or several base stations, which we plan before ordering.

How cordless DECT phones work with BT Cloud Voice

DECT is the radio standard used by most business and home cordless phones. It uses its own frequency band, separate from Wi-Fi, which helps keep calls clear in busy buildings.

A cordless set-up has two parts:

  • A base station that plugs into your office network and connects to BT Cloud Voice, powered by Power over Ethernet or a power adapter
  • Cordless handsets that register to the base station and charge on a desk cradle

Each handset can be set up as a BT Cloud Voice user, or share a number with a desk phone using shared call appearance (Connect and above). As with desk phones, only devices from BT's approved Cloud Voice range can be used. BT's set-up guide explains that cordless handsets arrive pre-registered to their base station: you fit the battery, plug in the base and wait for its light to show it is ready. We confirm which cordless devices are in BT's current range when you order.

Where cordless phones make sense

Cordless phones suit people who need to answer calls while moving around:

SettingHow cordless phones help
Shops and showroomsStaff answer customer calls on the shop floor or in the stockroom. Pair with a hunt group so any free handset can pick up
Warehouses and yardsSupervisors stay reachable away from the office. Rugged handsets are worth considering where phones get knocked or dusty
Surgeries and clinicsReception and practice staff move between rooms and still take calls. See BT Cloud Voice for healthcare
Pubs, restaurants and hotelsBookings are answered behind the bar, in the kitchen or at the front desk. See BT Cloud Voice for retail and hospitality
SchoolsSite staff and caretakers stay in touch across the grounds. See BT Cloud Voice for schools

A shared cordless handset is often a good fit for the Basic feature pack, which covers call routing, forwarding, transfer, hunt groups and three-way calling. Choose Connect for anyone who needs voicemail to email or Call Director. See feature packs.

Planning coverage

DECT range depends on the building more than the phone. Thick walls, metal racking, lift shafts, fridges and floors between rooms all shorten the range. Before ordering we work through:

  1. Where people need to take calls: list the rooms, floors and outside areas, not just the office.
  2. Where the base station can go: it needs a network connection and power, ideally high up and central.
  3. Known problem spots: stockrooms, cellars, cold rooms and outbuildings.
  4. How many people might be on calls at once: each base station supports a limited number of simultaneous calls, which matters in busy settings.
  5. A walk test: where coverage is uncertain, test the signal around the site before deciding on the layout.

Repeaters and multi-cell set-ups

When one base station cannot cover the site, there are two general ways to extend it:

  • Repeaters pick up the base station's signal and re-broadcast it, extending coverage into a room or area that is just out of reach. They need power but not a network cable.
  • Multi-cell systems use several base stations connected to your network, placed around the site. Handsets move between them, and calls can hand over from one to the next as the user walks.

Small sites usually manage with a single base station, perhaps with a repeater. Larger buildings, several floors or sites with outbuildings may need a multi-cell design. We tell you which approach your site needs and confirm whether BT's current range supports it before you order.

Battery life, charging and care

Cordless handsets are the devices most likely to be dropped, lost or left off charge. A few habits help:

  • Give each handset a charging cradle where its user ends the day
  • Label handsets with their user or role, so the right one goes back to the right place
  • Consider rugged handsets for warehouses, kitchens and outdoor work
  • Plan a spare handset for busy shared roles

Base stations depend on power and the network, so a power cut or network fault affects cordless phones in the same way as desk phones. Emergency 999 and 112 calls may not be possible during a power or network failure. See call quality: causes and fixes.

Frequently asked questions

Does BT Cloud Voice work with cordless phones?

Yes, with cordless devices from BT's approved Cloud Voice range. A DECT base station connects to your network and the cordless handsets work as BT Cloud Voice extensions. We confirm the current devices when you order.

How far do DECT cordless phones reach?

It depends on the building. Walls, floors, metal racking and fridges all reduce range. We plan coverage for your site and add repeaters or extra base stations where one base is not enough.

Can a cordless phone share a number with a desk phone?

Yes. Shared call appearance, included from the Connect feature pack upwards, lets one number appear on several devices, such as a desk phone and a cordless handset. BT says Connect supports up to five devices and Collaborate up to 20.

Do cordless phones work in a power cut?

Not usually. The base station needs power and your network to reach BT Cloud Voice, so a power or network failure stops calls, including 999 calls. A battery backup for your network equipment helps with short power cuts.
